What food items are [generally] exclusive to or originated in your area? In Buffalo we have what are simply called "wings" but apparently known to the rest of the world as "buffalo wings" or "hot wings." [The general rule of thumb is that if they're called anything but "wings," you're getting a subpar chicken wig experience.] Buffalo also has sponge candy, which I think I've heard referred to as "honeycomb" in other areas but it's nearly impossible to find it. A local beverage is Loganberry, which is tooth-achingly sweet & is a mixture of raspberry & blackberry flavored stuff. Non-carbonated. Lastly there's Mighty Taco, a local chain beloved by all & superior to Taco Bell in every possible way. In Pittsburgh, they're known for putting frenchfries on their salads.
There's a big debate about whether the Pavlova dessert (created and named after a famous ballerina) originated from here in Australia or actually in New Zealand. Truth be told I don't think this country has many unique culinary dishes, since the country is rather young and most of the residents are basically immigrants who brought the cooking style of their old countries over. I think Damper is something we at least originated (a doughy kind of bread, really yum), of course anything that involves animals native to here, so Kangaroo, uhh... yeah can't think of much else really. Oh yeah, vegemite. Whoop dee doo.
There's a fruit in Bolivia called achachairuthat is pretty much exclusive to Bolivia but apparently they've begun exporting seeds to Australia to be grown there. It's absolutely fucking delicious and addictive, you crack the outer layer (yellowish-orange) open, bonus points if you use your teeth to get some of the acidic flavor going, then the inside is a soft white fruit with a seed. It's delicious, stains the fuck out of clothing, and I can eat bags of it at a time.
Sounds delicious I love fruit in general (no homo) Have you ever eaten a pomegranate? Now that's something which will stain ANYTHING.
Hmmm I suppose we are know for King Crab and Salmon....... Other than that I guess I can't really think of anything. Oh yeah, the fast food joint Dick's. Yes, Dick's. I haven't eaten a burger from there but everyone says they're amazing. The fries are super greasy and floppy.(Awesome hangover food). And they have ice creams and shakes which are cheap and awesome!!! They wear paper hats like old skool burger joints. And there's only one sit down place in Seattle. Basically you just walk up, order and stuff your face........
Primanti Bros. sandwiches are a classic sort of thing for the area. There are a few locations in the city so they're all within striking distance. I pretty much lived at a coffee shop in Garfield called the Quiet Storm, near Penn & Aiken. It's vegetarian only so if that's not your gig then not worth hitting up. They used to be cash-only but I've heard rumors they accept cards now. places made famous on TV & are totally worth it: Lidia's in the Strip District on 14th & Smallman, I believe. It's a bar with phenomenal lebanese food. And then there's Nadine's in the Southside, just off East Carson on 27th. There is a little Italian place that makes their own pasta just off of Walnut street in Shadyside, Pizzutti's. Obviously there's more but if you want to know just ask.
So long as you're not stuck in one of the surrounding towns, everything's fairly nearby. God I love that city.
There's shit-all downtown. Ooh! Except for a bomb-ass Mexican place, if you like guac that's a place to hit up
Probably right in the center of downtown. Upside is it's not hard getting around. It's definitely a city but not a huge one. That, and there are some neighborhood-y things not too far from downtown
Norwegian foods: - Møsbrømlefse (yum) - Smalahove (yes it is what it looks like - a sheep head) - Fårikål (boiled sheep and cabbage) - Lapskaus Wonder why Norway hasn't won any culinary prizes? xD
