My laptop is dying, so I need to buy a new one. The last two computers I got were hand-me-downs, so I've never actually gone out to buy my own... I really don't wanna end up with a dud.

What are your opinions on the best brand of laptop, for a reasonable price? Your feedback will be much appreciated. :china:

Also would it be something you'd take with you places or something you'd use in leiu of a desktop?

It would be for email/facebook/etc. (I'm a console gamer - I've only played 2 games on my computer before).

I would also be travelling with it, but not very often (like maybe once every 2 weeks or so).

Probably go for a netbook. Maybe Asus or Acer.

I've noticed ACERs are usually a good price, in the $400-$500 range. Would you say they're a decent, good-quality brand?

Be sure and check out Newegg.com, they have good deals especially lately since the economy is the craps, there are feedback quotes on all the merchandise your looking at. FRY's and even Wal Mart sell laptops at very reasonable prices.
When I hear the name ACER it reminds me of the scamming and gouging they were known for 15 years ago, they were selling desktops and financing usually costing the consumer three times what the machine was worth, even new!! Maybe they have changed but I think I would go with a brand that has some actual support, Dell or Sony or Toshiba to name a few, even HP. I have never ran into a bad HP product, I even have old stuff from HP that was thrown out and it is now with me and still works. There were two Dells given to me last year and both had set out in the rain sitting on a curb for the garbage pickup, the only think that didn't work was the two hard drives, and that was probably why they were discarded to begin with, one was a 2.6ghz Intel.

    wat

The same can easily be said of acer.

All this shit always devolves into anecdotes about shit people have owned or seen friends own which is 100% never useful and completely irrelevant.

You get what you pay for, they are pretty much all the same so going with one brand over another is going to be largely pointless. I'd say go with the one that requires the least time to remove the shit they pre-install, just because that shit is annoying (they literally ALL do it, gg)

I use it for other crap besides email/FB (writing, watching DVD's, etc), so I'd definitely need an actual computer.

what do you do on facebook, such as games etc... some stuff won't work well with netbook...

Kompakt has good advice IMO. in the past I used to pick HP or Compaq because it was easier to pick and choose what to install when Sony and Toshiba didn't give the option. But these days you can't pick before installation and it must be removed manually. Meh. Yay laptops...

Also most netbooks are similar to each other and all you're buying is brand name, pretty color, screen size maybe, and MAYBE a larger HD... MAYBE more ram.. but if you were to upgrade it all, it'd all be the same. bleeeh

Interesting... (about HP & Compaq giving you installation options in the past). Too bad that's changed. Whatever laptop I end up going with, I guess I'll have to get a computer-savvy friend to help me remove unnecessary installations.
Since it sounds like most of the laptops are the same on the inside, the only other thing I'd be looking for in a laptop is longevity and good-quality. Can you guys recommend any brand(s) that's long-lasting and well-made?

I personally like Toshiba and Acer. I have owned my share of both and have never had any problems. None I couldn't fix anyway...

Here is a link to the one I have now. I would like to sell It actually. Paid $600 for it a year ago.

    Mine is Black/Grey. http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/L650/L655D-S5066WH/

Let me know if your interested. :p

I'd advise getting a desktop instead. Laptops have a higher cost of ownership, being proprietary and costly to repair.
