This is about a week late but this reaction has been percolating inside my head about as long. I just feel like picking at the thread of celebrity in our modern culture, mostly because I find myself shaking my head in disbelief and just hope I'm not the only one.

Chris Brown performed at the Grammy's after a three year exile about a week ago, and from what I hear it was technically a decent performance. Not only that, but he won a Grammy for best R'n B album for his latest offering F.A.M.E.. And it's true, whatever you say about him, you can't take away that he's a decent performer or a decent musical artist. The main question here though is: is that enough to have your slate wiped clean? But then again, this is celebrity we're talking about, where just having your name known has literally gotten people away with murder.
Just to refresh, the reason why Chris Brown hadn't been at the Grammy's in so long is because in 2009 he beat up his then girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna. She was sent to the hospital, while Brown, after turning himself in to the LAPD and posting $50,000 bail after, did 6 months of anger management and some community service time.
For a lot of people at the time, that just wasn't enough. Three years later however, judging by the reactions of fans and the media, it all never happened.

The common defense the fans have been using to recent nay-sayers are comments to the effect of "hey, it's been 3 years, he did the time". And while I'm not one to put a number to pretending a case of physical assault never happened, maybe it'd be easier to let bygones be bygones if Breezy (ugh) had seemed somewhat remorseful in the last couple of years since he sent Rihanna to the hospital with multiple contusions.
But there's this aura, swagger if you will, that when he appears in the media he seems completely unapologetic. He doesn't look like a guy humbled at all. He looks like a guy who has been mildly inconvienienced, at best. His recent album which he won the Grammy for, F.A.M.E.? Self-righteously stands for Forgiving All My Enemies.
And it's not like Chris Brown hasn't had a history of being completely disingenuous; anybody remembver his Michael Jackson tribute performance at the BET awards in 2010? Where he got a little bit too emotional during Man In The Mirror?

So let's just say we've established that Chris Brown is a douchebag.

Here's what really spins my head though: the fact Chris Brown is riding a wave of popularity again, and that many of his apologists are women. Girls the age of, or younger than Rihanna.
And of course, what better place to get such a barometer reading than Twitter, where potential stupidity is succinctly condensed to 140 characters or less:

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/horrible-reactions-to-chris-brown-at-the-grammys

What's scarier about this selection of pro-consensus tweets is that they're almost word for word exactly the same, like a ridicilous hive-mind of low self esteem and trashy.

I think it's safe to assume that all the women behind these comments are too emotionally underdeveloped to grasp the concept of what it's actually like to be abused or just have never experienced what it's like to be in either a physically or emotionally abusive realtionship, or else their comments would differ.
What I personally find scary though is these comments by these same girls would differ greatly if we were just talking about some guy. But this is Chris Brown, singer and dancer extroadinaire, whose celebrity factor is essentially giving him carte blanche.

Here's great article from Hello Giggles which runs down what seems like a lack of true repercussions for Chris Brown. Take note of the part where Usher, who dared to call into question Brown's seeming lack of remorse suffered a backlash so large he made an apology.

The scariest thing of all about Chris Brown's welcoming back into the media however? That it actually provided an example of Fox News spitting truth:

When Fox News comes out smelling like roses, you know something has to be terribly wrong.

Some recent fallout however, both good and bad.
Good: Brown's recent appeal for his 5 year probation period to be cut short for good behavious was denied.
Bad: Brown and Rihanna have collaborated recently on two new singles, and are rumored to be an item again.

This guy is a piece of shit, and he should have went to jail. But that doesn't even matter anymore. It's funny how quickly people forget that someone is a monster after a few years and a brand new album. I just hope some other pretty girl doesn't fall victim to him again.

You would think he would have been blackballed by the industry, but the music industry isn't one that cares if superstars are role models, afterall someone let britney spears record again after her repeated meltdowns.
