Their goal was 400,000, but the Kickstarter donation tally is standing at $1,505,333, and that's only after 2 days. They hit their projected tally after only 8 hours. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure The whole idea for the project was Tim Schaefer to revisit his roots with a modern take on the classic point 'n click adventure game, a genre he cut his teeth on and helped bring into prominence in the 90's with games like Day Of The Tentacle and Full Throttle. Not only are they going to make a game here though, but they're going to document the process as it happens also. Apparently with so much extra funds, they can look at things like quality voice acting and even multi-platform publishing.
Kind of related: Tim Schaefer mentioned in an interview recently that he'd love to so Psychonauts 2 and has actually pitched it around, but hasn't had any takers. In reply, Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft, offers to help fund it https://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/166843982683451392
Tim was one of the driving forces of Monkey Island, so yeah, he knows what he's doing. As for no one being interested in Psychonauts 2? That's what's wrong with the video game industry atm. A game that was a critical success but a financial flounder isn't worth a second attempt (Even though financial successes and critical failures come out by the dozen)? Isn't that what marketing is all about? Finding out what went wrong the first time and correcting it the second time around? The game would obviously be a superior product to the majority of the crap pumped out these days, just needs someone with half-a-brain to peddle it to the masses.
The cleared the 2 Million mark just yesterday I think, which is awesome news. Here's a part of the documentary, filmed before the Kickstarter had even been launched, of Schafer talking to old LucasArts buddy Ron Gilbert, both of who are spearheading this project. It's just over half an hour but well worth a listen/watch to get an insight into what it's like to be a game developer and just for the interesting discussion about whether a classic adventure game has a market in our current day.
