Take one part X-Men, one part Blair Witch, one part Carrie, one part Death Note, one part Cloverfield, one part Kick Ass, one part InFamous, one part District 9 and so on and so on and so on........ Yes it's a concept that's been done repeatedly in Hollywood, but it can still be done well and effectively, this is one of those examples.
It's good, I don't think it's going to be the best thing I'll see this year but it's still good as I noted in spite of the fact that this is a story and style that's been done repeatedly now. The performances are very strong and that's probably why it winds up being good. On top of that unlike a Cloverfield or Blair Witch it's not just one camera being used, instead it's a few handhelds along with security and news cameras combined, what District 9 was going for but here it makes much more sense.
I went and saw it the other day... Didn't hate it. But honestly all I could think about was how they've pretty much taken Pearl Jams - 'Jeremy' music video, aged the kid a few years, and stretched it to a feature film... with a splash of space rock for good measure.
I don't seem to recall Jeremy having telekentic powers in that music video, but it's a good analogy, fits right in there with the other ones I made in the first post.
