A teaching psychologist "went there" in an online blog for Psychology Today: Health, Help, Happiness + Find a Therapist recently:

LONDON: A British psychologist has sparked an international race row with his research claiming that black women are less attractive than others.

The controversial study conducted by Satoshi Kanazawa, a lecturer at the London School of Economics has ranked Black women as lowest and Asian women as highest scorers. The findings are based on a survey of white, Asian, black and native American men and women who rated each other's attractiveness in photos.

Kanazawa's explanation to his research is that African women have higher levels of testosterone compared to other races and therefore, have more masculine features.

Citing examples to support his findings, Kanazawal said, 'science' would suggest Naomi Campbell is less attractive than fellow supermodel Elle Macpherson.

"The only thing I can think of that might potentially explain the lower average level of physical attractiveness among black women is testosterone," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

He further claims, "Africans on average have higher levels of testosterone than other races...women with higher levels of testosterone have more masculine features and are therefore less physically attractive."

Naturally, this produced a race centered backlash:

Student groups at the London School of Economics are calling for the dismissal of a social scientist who has become embroiled in a racism row after claiming that a study showed black women to be less attractive than women of other races.

Dr Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the institution, published his comments on a blog and claimed he had analysed data from an online study of physical attractiveness.

In his article for Psychology Today, Kanazawa wrote: "Black women are … far less attractive than white, Asian, and Native American women." The piece drew a barrage of complaints from readers and has since been removed from the site.

The row has prompted the University of London Union Senate, the union's legislative body, which represents more than 120,000 students, to vote unanimously for the dismissal of Kanazawa, and to condemn his research.

Sherelle Davids, anti-racism officer-elect of the LSE students' union, said: "Kanazawa deliberately manipulates findings that justify racist ideology. As a black woman I feel his conclusions are a direct attack on black women everywhere who are not included in social ideas of beauty."

Amena Amer, incoming LSE students' union education officer, added: "We support free speech and academic freedom, but Kanazawa's research fuels hate against ethnic and religious minorities promoted by neo-Nazi groups. Not only does he use the LSE's credentials to legitimise his 'research' but this jeopardises the academic credibility of the LSE."

Unfortunately the blog in question has been removed from the site, and Satoshi Kanazawa from his position as blog writer on the website.

The discussion however does raise some interesting questions. Ignoring that "beauty is objective", are there physical traits that make some races "ugly"? Does the general opinion of what connotates physical beauty change with region?
Was daring to publish such a blog online veiled prejudice, purposefully or not?

I think what people view as beauty would be a regional thing... I'd think people actually from Africa would probably say white women are ordinary.

Very generally speaking I don't find males from other races attractive. Beautiful artistically/aesthetically (ctrl+v from that other thread) but not attractive sexually.

Well atleast he blogged it (even if it was online for everyone/anyone else to see)---and didn't make
an international article over the matter. *kekekeke* LOL, fucker is full of personal and/or environmental bias.

I could show him some black girls/women that'd make him loathe the day he ever wrote that article and

He didn't say that they were all ugly though. Just that in general the average African people tend to be less feminine than in most races.

Well, he kind of has a point. Why do you think all the rappers want to know where the white wimminz at?

Also, look at the famous black women who are considered attractive... they generally have very "white" features about them, not the large lips and noses a lot of black people have.

I mean, there are ugly people of every race, but some of the stereotypical features of black women are not real high on the list of what most other people find attractive. The man has a point.

Most African-Americans aren't really 'black' anymore (seriously, compared to people straight out of Africa) so I don't really consider them to be the subject of the article. Comparing black and white supermodels is stupid because no matter the race they are few and far between - the writer of the article was talking about the average person. I don't think he meant to be a racist prick (maybe he did though) since he did research that corroborates his theory about the testosterone.

I don't agree with him though. I did laugh when he placed Asians first.

I dunno... I tried to think of "natural" black celebrities that I find attractive who don't seem mixed (like Halle Berry, Stacy Dash or Alicia Keys)

I'm not sure of Beyonce's ethinic background but okay, her skin tone lends to the fact she seems to be mixed a little.

Kelis was a wider nose and some big ole lips and looks pretty cute IMO. She also doesn't look anglo in any sense.

Ditto for Vivica Fox. Would hit thaaaaaaaaaaat

Okay, Holly Robinson Peete is a bit older and doesn't appeal to my tastes but I recognise she's far from ugly.

But like Esko said, they're all a far cry from actual native Africans, so...

First off, I have to give the author kudos for going there in this politically correct insane asylum we all live in.

Second, -the author- is basing these assumptions off the preferences of the people he surveyed. Right wrong or otherwise, he is just reporting what others already think and feel and -yes- talk about in the bar rooms.

Just outta curiosity... I wonder if he actually tested the testosterone levels of each of the women rated to see if the levels are on average, different between the 3 races. (Or was his conclusion, "they look more masculine, so therefore they must have more testosterone").

Hahaha. Is it a stereotype to say that black women seem to generally have the capacity to be more athletic? I mean, certain races have a certain genetic makeup that lend themselves physically, and a good portion of black women have the gift of having taller and leaner bodies (unless they live in America)

Everybody has different preferences when it comes to beauty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are many beautiful black women such as beyonce, Rihanna etc. so I would totally disagree with statement which says “Black women less physically attractive than other women”.
